Habitat ReStores Offer Training Opportunities for Seniors Through Goodwill Employment Program

Habitat for Humanity ReStores in Bucks County are collaborating with Goodwill’s Senior Community Service Employment Program to offer a special work-training program designed to help Bucks County residents 55+ gain work experience and new skills. The older adults receive fewer job offers, search for work longer and are less likely to find re-employment after losing a job. Pennsylvania is one of six states in which Goodwill operates the program.

Through the program, the ReStores provide on-the-job training, intended to help those aged 55 and older update their jobs skills, build work experience and confidence, and continue to have economic security and well-being.

“Extended unemployment, age discrimination, lack of skills and other barriers are among the challenges older Bucks County residents face in finding a job,” says B.J. Breish, ReStore Director. “The Goodwill employment program offers workers paid on-the-job training in our Langhorne and Bucks County ReStores.”

Goodwill also partners with other non-profit agencies and government entities to provide needed training throughout Bucks County.

The Habitat for Humanity’s ReStores have hired a full-time truck scheduler through the program, and they currently have a Goodwill employee working at the Chalfont ReStore.

The Bucks County ReStores in Langhorne and Chalfont are socially conscious home improvement stores that sell donated new and gently used furniture, cabinets, appliances, building supplies, housewares, decor and more at a fraction of the retail price to the general public. Proceeds from the ReStores enable Habitat for Humanity of Bucks County to build more homes and help others renovate and repair their homes at prices they can afford.

About Habitat Bucks

The mission of Habitat for Humanity of Bucks County (Habitat Bucks) is, “Building Homes, Empowering Families.”  Habitat Bucks has an open-door policy: All who believe that everyone needs a decent, affordable place to live are welcome to help with the work, and they accept volunteers and supporters from all backgrounds who are willing to serve people in need of decent housing.

The Habitat Bucks Homeownership Program provides an opportunity for low-income families to increase their independence and economic well-being through home ownership and educational opportunities.  Habitat partner families work hard for their homes; they contribute an average of 200 hours of sweat equity and will pay a mortgage for their home.  Through these unique programs, families acquire a sense of ownership and responsibility that they may not have as renters or tenants.

Since their founding in 1990, Habitat Bucks has built 101 affordable homes in Bucks County.  Through their A Brush with Kindness program, Habitat Bucks makes repairs to the exterior of homes, including painting, porch repair and the installation of handicapped accessible ramps.  Revenue from Habitat ReStores provides a source of sustainable funding for the construction and repair of homes.
