“You’re already famous, now you’re going to make me famous,” photographer Lawrence Schiller said to Marilyn Monroe as they discussed the photos he was about to shoot of her in 1962. “Don’t be so cocky,” Marilyn replied, “photographers can be easily replaced.” Several days later, Larry had not been replaced and they were on the set of her last film, Something’s Got to Give. That was when Marilyn began her attention-grabbing plan: a poolside photo session in which she’d playfully exit the swimming pool without her bathing suit on. Schiller’s pictures made headlines and the covers of magazines around the world, and then tragically, six weeks after they were published, she was gone.
Now these photographs—and dozens of others Schiller made of Marilyn and other Hollywood stars from Paul Newman and Robert Redford to Clint Eastwood to Barbra Streisand, to Alfred Hitchcock and Debbie Reynolds—will be on exhibit for the first time in Bucks County at the Gallery des Artistes at 20 West Bridge Street in New Hope. “I’ve shown my photographs in museums and galleries all over the world from Cannes to Beijing, and I’m excited to finally share them with the community here,” says Schiller, who moved to nearby Upper Makefield in 2017.
Lawrence Schiller began his career as a photojournalist for Life, The Saturday Evening Post, and Paris Match, among others. He photographed some of the most iconic figures of the 1960s, from Lee Harvey Oswald to Robert F. Kennedy, from Muhammad Ali to Barbra Streisand to Bette Davis, to Clint Eastwood to Paul Newman and Robert Redford. He has written for the New Yorker and five of his books have become New York Times bestsellers. Schiller’s collaborations include the Pulitzer Prize-winning book with Norman Mailer, The Executioner’s Song. He has also directed seven motion pictures and miniseries for television; The Executioner’s Song and Peter the Great won five Emmys and a feature-length documentary he directed won an Oscar.
Lawrence Schiller: Marilyn Monroe & Other Photographs will be on view from August 3 through September 2, 2018. The public is invited to an opening reception with the photographer on Saturday, August 4 at 6:oo p.m.
Gallery des Artistes is located at 20 West Bridge Street, New Hope, PA 18938, and open in the summer from Thursday through Tuesday, 11am to 7pm.
